What Does Beard Balm Do?

What is beard balm?

Simply put, beard balm is a type of haircare balm that you put in your beard to keep in styled, moisturized, and smooth.  Most beard balms are “leave in” products, meaning that you put it in during the morning and leave it on the entire day.  Most quality beard balms are designed to absorb into your beard and moisturize without feeling heavy.

Why use a beard balm?  Because it makes your beard look neat, well-groomed, and awesome looking.  Have you ever seen someone with an amazing looking beard and wish you could grow one like that?  Chances are that guy is using beard balm everyday.

What are the best beard balms available on the market?

There are basically 5 large beard balm brands on the market:

  • Honest Amish: Known for its all-natural, handmade-esque products, Honest Amish is a choice for those seeking a product with minimal but recognizable ingredients. Their beard balm is praised for its moisturizing properties and ability to soften and condition the beard.  The texture can be a little on the oily side.

  • Scotch Porter: This brand is often lauded for its high-quality ingredients and a focus on multi-purpose products. Their beard balm is a popular choice for its conditioning and moisturizing benefits, and it's particularly noted for its pleasant, sophisticated scent.

  • Daytona Supply Co: A new kind of beard balm designed with a beeswax-forward formula that results in a creamier, less greasy balm.  Rather than being oily, this beard balm is able to infuse natural oils, but with more of a “matte” feel than the other beard balms.  Best for people who want less oil and more hold for their beards.  DSC is also known for their wide variety of unique scents.

  • King C Gillete: A well-known brand, and their beard balm is a popular and widely available option, especially at major retailers. However, it's often viewed slightly differently than the brands mentioned previously, and there's some nuance to its reputation. While it contains nourishing ingredients like cocoa butter, shea butter, and argan oil, some users and grooming enthusiasts have noted that the ingredient list also includes things like silicones and other synthetic ingredients, which some prefer to avoid in favor of all-natural formulas.

  • Cremo: Cremo is a widely available and affordable brand that is praised for its diverse product line. Their styling beard balm is a popular choice for men who want a product that tames unruly hairs and provides a light hold without feeling heavy or waxy.

When looking for a beard balm, the brand is less important versus looking for quality ingredients.  Any beard balm that uses natural waxes (like beeswax, candelilla wax) and natural oils (sweet almond oil, coconut oil, jojoba oil, etc) will be best.  Many beard experts advise avoiding beard balms with harsh chemicals or silicone ingredients.

At Daytona Supply Co, we obviously recommend our bespoke beard balms that were custom-formulated to have higher hold and be less oily than others on the market.  We worked for 3 years to get the process perfect.  Ultimately though, you should use the one that works best for you.

TL;DR: Choose a beard balm with natural ingredients and find a scent you like to match your mood.
